Herbert Daughtry, Jr., Esq.

Herbert Daughtry, Jr. is the Executive Director of Educator Effectiveness at the Newark Board of Education. In this role, he leads a team that is responsible for the evaluation and development of teachers and administrators. He is responsible for developing and facilitating professional development for new teachers, mentors, administrators, school improvement panels, across 60 schools as well as central office staff.

Prior to accepting a position in Newark, he was the founding Principal of Ronald Edmonds Learning Center II, MS 484 in Brooklyn, NY. During his six years as Principal, Daughtry led a staff that successfully shifted the academic achievement and educational opportunities of their students. Math achievement increased by over 40 percentage points and Language Arts by over 30 percentage points during his tenure as Principal. Additionally, most of his students left middle school having completed at least two high school classes.

Mr. Daughtry was originally trained as a lawyer, receiving his BA in political science from the University of Chicago in 1991 and Juris Doctorate from the Georgetown University Law center in 1995.  He practiced law as a public defender in Philadelphia and Bronx New York before leaving the law to become a teacher. The career change was based primarily on his belief that working in k-12 education could help prevent many young people of color from becoming involved in the criminal justice system in New York. He received his school leadership training at Pace University as a part of the New Leaders for New Schools Program.

He and his wife, Danielle Cooper Daughtry, Esq., have two sons, Herbert III and Myles, and he is a member of The House of the Lord Church in Brooklyn, New York.
