Who Best Represents the American Ideals?

November 15, 2017 by Herbert Daughtry

Part Five

Who best represent the American ideals: Colin Kaepernick and all who believe as he believes; or, Mr. Donald Trump and his followers?

Colin Kaepernick, a young man decides to kneel then sit during the National Anthem. He risks a million-dollar contract and huge financial endorsements. He’s ostracized by friends, and hated by millions of people. He is rejected and denied employment, etc. This young man risks everything for what he believes while his adversaries and opponents accuse him of being unpatriotic.

He states his own reason for his actions: “I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag of a country that oppresses Black people, and people of color. To me, this is bigger than football, and it will be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the streets, and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.”

On the other side is Mr. Donald Trump and all who follow him. Mr. Trump has publicly called the protestors SOB’s, and called on the owners to fire them. He has been called by his colleagues, and some who support him now, at one time or another, a pathological liar, a con man, and a phony. His administration has been likened to a daycare center. He has been called “unhinged.” Psychiatrists have called for a mental examination. It has been said of him that he’s unfit for office.

He has been known to tweet things that are not true, and everyone knows it. He’s been known to disrespect women. It has been made public that he boasts of grabbing woman by their private parts.

He has compared peaceful protestors with publicly declared Nazis/racists and even said that they are good people among them. He has been at war against the media. He has been known to convict persons who later prove to be innocent.

He relentlessly pursued Mr. Barack Obama, the Former President of the United States, claiming that Mr. Obama did not have a U.S. birth certificate, and states he was not a citizen of the United States. Even when all the evidence proved otherwise, he continued this harassment. He has been called self-centered and narcissistic. He is guilty of perpetually misrepresenting people with pejorative appellations.

Recently, two veteran Senators made comments on the same day. Senator Bob Corker, during a CNN interview with Mr. Manu Raju on October 24, 2017, made these statements regarding Mr. Trump: “He has difficulty with the truth on many issues. He is unable to do the job. There is constant non-truth telling. He is not interested in advancing the interests of the country. He is unstable and incompetent. He debases our nation. Much of what he says is untrue. Unfortunately, our nation finds itself in this place.” Senator Corker said that he wouldn’t support him again.

Then, there was Senator Jeff Flake who took to the floor of the Senate to give his views on Trump. He said, among other things, “There’s a flagrant disregard for truth and decency. His reckless, outrageous, and undignified behavior are called ‘telling like it is’ by his supporters. Mr. Trump calls ‘fake things true, and true things fake.'”

In his statement, Senator Flake said, “It must also be said that I rise today with no small measure of regret. Regret, because of the state of our disunion. Regret because of the disrepair and destructiveness of our politics. Regret because of the indecency of our discourse. Regret because of the coarseness of our leadership. Regret for the compromise of our moral authority, and by our – I mean, all of our – complicity in this alarming and dangerous state of affairs. It is time for our complicity and our accommodation of the unacceptable to end.”

This is stunning! Shocking! Unbelievable! Incredible! This is not the media, some political operative, or anti-Trump activists giving public views on Mr. Trump. These are men of distinction with long years of commendable service to the country. Senator Corker is the Chairman of the powerful Foreign Relations Committee. He was an early supporter of Mr. Trump. He is quiet-spoken, and he is what used to be called a Southern gentleman, likewise Senator Flake.

Dr. James C. McIntosh, in an article in the Amsterdam News (October 19-25, 2017) entitled, “Trump Unfit to Lead, Say Doctors of Duty to Warn Movement,” reported on hundreds of meetings of mind doctors across the country. He wrote, “Indeed, diagnoses are bounded this weekend when hundreds of psychiatrists, psychologists, and other mental health practitioners of the Duty to Warn movement met this weekend in a dozen town hall meetings around the country, including NYC, at NYU Law School ‘to demand the removal of Donald Trump from office because of what they called his dangerous lack of mental capacity to serve as president. Speaker after speaker at the NYU location cited Trump’s ‘clearly observable behaviors’ and ‘dangerous statements’ as evidence of his unfitness for office…. The mental health professionals at NYU Law School not only met to fulfill that duty, but also after the meeting they marched through the streets of Lower Manhattan more than a hundred strong to City Hall to publicly make their statement.”

Mr. Tom Snyder has spent multiple millions of dollars of his own money to buy time on public media to call for Mr. Trump’s impeachment. These ads are repeated daily. One of the reasons Mr. Snyder gives for the impeachment of Mr. Trump is: “He is a clear and present danger, mentally unstable, and armed with nuclear weapons.” Finally, when Mr. Trump’s turn came to exercise his patriotic duty and answer his country’s call to join the Armed Forces, he unpatriotically was able to secure deferments.

Now, we turn to answer the question: Who best represents the ideals of America, i.e. the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the best traditions of the country? Is there any doubt in anybody’s mind?

The End.
